1989 saw only four new Fighting Fantasy gamebooks from Puffin:
- 37 Portal of Evil (February)
- 38 Vault of the Vampire (March)
- 39 Fangs of Fury (July)
- 40 Dead of Night (November)
alongside which were published the first Fighting Fantasy novel (The Trolltooth Wars) and the first true Advanced Fighting Fantasy book Dungeoneer. From the start of this year the regular gamebooks dropped the numbering on the covers and spines (although the number did return to the spine for book #40 onwards).
