The Black Elk is associated with the Marcher Lands of Hachiman.

This is a huge animal. Its antlers are up to fifteen feet long, seemingly made of ebony, and its eyes are said to be jewels of flame. The antler has magical properties, due perhaps to its strange whorled pattern, like a serpent. In fact, if struck correctly it will turn into a serpent staff.

At the time of the events described in Sword of thr Samurai, this animal had not been seen in seventy years.
