Champaques were a race of creature, known for their gruesome habit of feeding upon brain matter.

Description[]

They possessed long green fur, which served to camouflage it well in the higher branches of Pango Trees, and were beasts to be avoided at all costs.[1] Fairly intelligent with the face of an ageing human and long, powerful limbs, they appeared to be a curious blend of man and ape when first encountered, and it is a solitary being.

Origins and Distribution[]

The champaque was one of the four types of great ape that dominate Mauristatia[2] and possibly occurs in parts of its adjacent lands.

Champaque were said to have once been the envious humans of Limlai, transformed into apes by way of an infernal deal made by a certain Prince Olziruth.[3]

It was unknown whether champaques had existed prior to this event.

Special Abilities[]

Champaque were remarkable mimics, particularly skilled at copying the voice of any animal they happened to encounter, and it was also capable of copying human mannerisms, given its resemblance to them. They would use their ability to keep their prey off-guard, never giving much information away, until they got a chance to attack.

A champaque fed almost exclusively on brain matter, and is able to absorb parts of it intact, thus acquiring some of the intelligence of its victim. When its prey had been more than just moderately intelligent, such as a human, this caused an increase in the Champaque's skill - for every such meal eaten in the last 24 hours, the Champaque's skill would continue to increase, up to a certain maximum.

Further Notes[]

  • Champaque is both the single and the plural form of the name.
  • Champaque were first mentioned in Warlock Issue 5 in the special The Apes of Mauristatia "Out of the Pit" section, as a game aid for the adventure In Search of the Mungies' Gold.
