Origins and Distribution

The Champaque is one of the four species of Great Ape that dominate Mauristatia[1] and possibly occurs in parts of its adjacent lands. Formerly just another species of Great Ape, its isolation caused it to develop in a number of interesting ways.[2]

Description

Easily recognisable by its long green fur, which serves to camouflage it well in the higher branches of Pango Trees, the Champaque is a beast to be avoided at all costs.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many Fairly intelligent with the face of an ageing Human and long, powerful limbs, the Champaque appears to be a curious blend of Man and Ape when first encountered, and it is a solitary being.

Special Abilities

Champaque are remarkable mimics, particularly skilled at copying the voice of any animal it encounters, and it is also capable of copying Human mannerisms, given its resemblance to them. They will use their ability to keep their prey off-guard, never giving much information away, until they get a chance to attack.

A Champaque feeds almost exclusively on brain matter, and is able to absorb parts of it intact, thus acquiring some of the intelligence of its victim. When its prey has been more than just moderately intelligent, such as a Human, this causes an increase in the Champaque's skill - for every such meal eaten in the last 24 hours, the Champaque's skill is increased by one point to a maximum of 5.

Further Notes

  • Champaque is both the single and the plural form of the name.
  • Champaque were first mentioned in Warlock Issue 5 in the special The Apes of Mauristatia "Out of the Pit" section, as a game aid for the adventure In Search of the Mungies' Gold.
