Mampang Fortress is a great citadel located in the fastness of High Xamen.[1] It was built by the Archmage and his followers. The fortress helped build the Archmage's ascendancy in the region, giving him both a stronghold and the rudiments of a kingdom within its walls. Mampang was perhaps one of the most unassailable places in all of Titan. The fortress rests inside the hollow of an extinct volcano[2] and there is only a single narrow pass through the thick natural walls of solid rock surrounding it.[3] Its front gate is magically locked[4] and attended by guardposts, while its outer walls are several metres thick.[5][6] Merely reaching Mampang from any direction on foot requires a perilous trek through the mountainous region of Xamen.

The fortress was itself a vast edifice, mostly populated by chaotics. The Archmage appeared to keep their allegiance through a combination of incentive and intimidation. During his reign the dark Gods especially favoured Mampang with their attentions, protecting it from the intrusion of hostile deities.[7] However, the Archmage was destined to meet his end at the hands of an Analander sent to recover the Crown of Kings from him. The status of Mampang and its denizens after the fall of the Archmage is unknown.

Throben Doors[]

The interior reaches of Mampang are protected from intrusion by four Throben doors. Appearing as normal double doors they are in fact enchanted by the magic of the Throben Necromancers' Guild.[8] Each one bears a special protection against unauthorised entry, and each one requires a particular means of gaining entry through it. [9]

Outermost Throben Door[]

Inflicts poison tipped spikes upon would-be trespassers.[10] The poison is fast acting and deadly. The key to this door is held by the guards.[11]

Second Throben Door[]

Inflicts complete memory loss[12] upon those who don't know the password, "Alaralatanalara", which must be whispered to the keyhole. The secret to this door can be gained from Valignya.[13]

Third Throben Door[]

Creates an illusion of a fiery inferno. The inferno can only be passed through by those aware of its illusory nature, or else the fire proves fatal. Naggamanteh, the torture master, holds the secret to this door.[14]

Innermost Throben Door[]

Guarded by the Sleepless Ram,[15] and can only be opened by a special key held by Cartoum, the captain of the Archmage's guards.[16]
