Hero of Beneath Nightmare Castle

The hero of Beneath Nightmare Castle was a skilled and hardy warrior who returned to Neuberg following an unsuccessful escapade, after an absence of several years.

During the hero's previous visit, he or she fought alongside the Margrave of Neuberg, Baron Tholdur, at the Battle of Helm Hill. The hero received the ring of Tholdur's House as a token of friendship from the Baron himself, having been his most trusted and valiant comrade in arms.

The hero had expected a warm welcome, but found that the Margrave was being held in thrall by the Southern sorceress Senyakhaz. Neuberg had become a place of nightmares and horror, for Senyakhaz was in league with the ancient sorcerer Xakhaz, whose spirit had been entombed centuries before below Neuberg Keep.

The hero infiltrated the castle and defeated both Senyakhaz and Xakhaz, restoring the Baron to full health and vigour. The southerners were soon expelled from the city and the immortal part of Xakhaz was taken by Huw, the priest of Oiden, for safekeeping. The Baron named the warrior as heir to his lands.

Weapons the hero may have found include the Ice Sword, a silver tipped mace, a Runic Axe and the Trident of Skarlos. He or she may also have obtained the Talisman of Loth.

It is possible that the hero also took part in other books, either before or afterwards.
