Spoiler Warning!!!: Plot and/or ending details of a Fighting Fantasy publication follow. Please DO NOT read this article if you do not want foreknowledge of this publication. Although the article below is based on canon, some of its content is considered extrapolation because it assumes a certain course of events through an adventure that has many possible routes. Finally, the use of "Hero" and other male- gender expressions pertaining to the subject in the article and/or title of the article is not intended to exclude the possibility that the hero was female.

The Hero of Daggers of Darkness was one of Segrek's Select, the heirs presumptive to Segrek, the ruler of Kazan. Whilst in Gorak, the hero was attacked by a Mamlik Assassin sent by Segrek's Vizier, Chingiz, and scratched by a Death Spell Dagger. His or her life was saved by the wizard Astragal, who had assumed a false identity of Gally and become a drinking companion of the hero for unspecified reasons.[1]

Astragal told the hero that he had recently discovered that Segrek had died the previous year and Chingiz had kept the death a secret so that his assassins could kill all the Select, allowing Chingiz to seize the throne. Furthermore, the only permanent cure for the Death Spell Dagger was to return the dagger to Chingiz, so the hero set out at once for Kazan.[2]

After attempting to acquire medallions from the Six Clans, the hero entered the capital, Sharrabbas and eventually made it to the throne. He or she returned the dagger to Chingiz, only to find that he had just been killed by his daughter, Meghan-na-Durr. Meghan died trying to kill the heir within the chamber of the throne and in so doing was turned to dust.[3]

The Six Clans supported the hero, due both to tradition and the fact that he or she had proved to be the greatest warrior in the land. The hero was hailed by many as a worthy successor to the great Segrek.[4]

It is possible that the hero also featured in other books during his or her time of exile. However, it would cause considerable continuity problems if the hero were to be the protagonist of any books in the main series after becoming ruler of Kazan. At the start of the book, the hero is armed with a sword and apparently wears Gorak armour.[5] It is not clear whether the hero knew Astragal previously and was fooled by an illusion or disguise or whether he or she worked out the wizard's identity from clues in Astragal's room in Gorak Keep.
