"Spoiler!" Beware!
MAG

A sorcerer using MAG to protect himself.

mag is a spell in The Sorcery Spell Book, requiring 2 stamina points to use.

When cast, the Sorcerer is temporarily protected from most hostile spells or magical traps.[1]

In the Advanced Fighting Fantasy version of The Sorcery Spell Book, the caster is protected from the next hostile spell, regardless of power, provided it takes effect within a number of combat rounds equal to the sorcerer's Inner Strength.[2]

Use in the Sorcery! series[]

When cast, this spell may protect from the harmful effects of magic without dispelling the enchantment. For example, the Analander is not harmed by magical fire covering a chest[3] and an animated rope cannot get within two feet whilst the spell is active.[4] At other times, the spell can force a smoky apparition to return to its box, seemingly in pain[5] or dispel an illusion affecting the caster.[6] However, the spell is not powerful enough to defeat the supernatural events caused by the Earth Serpent,[7] nor an earthquake caused by the divine power of Throff.[8]

In some cases, the sorcerer expects the spell to warn of the presence of hostile magic, but no such warning comes (as no magic is at work)[9] or the spell actually confirms that no magic is present.[10] However, in most cases, the spell reassures the caster that he or she is protected from magic, but no magical attack occurs before the spell wears off.[11]
