Origins and DistributionEdit
Considered to be one of the undead, they are nevertheless a very mysterious creature. For instance, it is not known whether this sole Night Horror is unique, or if there are more of them to be found within both the Lost City of Vatos and also other ruins in the surrounding desert.
They may be related to the Night Stalkers who dwell in the caves of the Moonstone Hills and elsewhere, which are similarly named and also enjoy a nocturnal or dungeon-dwelling existence. A better hypothesis, going by their single-eyed skull structure, brutish strength, and skill and stamina scores, is that the Night Horror is actually a type of undead Cyclops.
Night Horrors are deformed, one-eyed mutants. They are muscular humanoids, though hunchbacked, with a shaven and oddly lumpy skull. Their single eye is large and in the centre of their face, and they also have a wide, fang-filled mouth. They are often clad in simple tunics and leggings, usually made from dark cloth.
- The Night Horror is a formidable opponent and is difficult to defeat with a normal weapon. If you win an Attack Round, roll one die. If you roll between 1 and 3, your blow will not have harmed the Night Horror's undead flesh. If you roll between 4 and 6, your blow will wound it in the normal way.
- The Night Horror can be slain instantly by ringing a Brass Handbell. The creature will try to cover its ears with its deformed hands, scream in silent agony and collapse dead to the floor.
- In Temple of Terror the Night Horror was wielding a powerful artefact known simply as the Silver Rod, which fired a magical bolt of white light at its victims. More normally, they will attack with either their bare hands (treat all damage as "Large Fist"), or a simple weapon such as a club or an axe.
- The Night Horror is one of those very rare creatures that turns up in one of the early Allansia-based books, but fails to make it into Out of the Pit.
