Papagayo Island is an amateur Fighting Fantasy adventure by Gaetano Abbondanza. It was first published online in 2014[1], and forms part of the Tales from the Bird Islands collection.

Background[]

The first mate squints down at his charts before returning his gaze towards the mass of land that has appeared on the horizon from your ship’s starboard side.

“Papagayo Island,” he mutters before having another look at the charts. “That’s what we’ve sighted, captain- as sure as I’m standing here now.”

You raise your spyglass to have a better look. You can make out a sheer cliff wall ringing the beach. On top of the cliff is a thick, verdant jungle, spreading back as far as you can see. You put down the spyglass and turn back towards the handful of senior crew that have joined you at the ship’s prow.

“Have any of you ever been there?” you ask. Your request is met by an uncomfortable silence. After a few seconds, however, the quartermaster speaks up. He is an older, scarred man named Califas, a veteran of many voyages.

“My father mentioned this place, only once,” he says slowly, his face pinched in concentration at the recollection of a distant memory. “He mentioned a village, and something about…the ‘bird people’. I tried to find out more, as he was always eager to pass on stories of his travels, but he for some reason he was very tight lipped about this place.” He shrugs.

“Well, if there’s still a village, it’s worth making landfall,” you reply, turning your gaze back to the island. “We need to make a few repairs, and we can also inquire about provisions.” Your mind made up, the helmsman steers towards Papagayo Island.
