How the Shekel relates in value to the Gold Piece (which a standard unit of currency in the Inland Sea) is uncertain, but it appears to be of relatively low value, since the poor of Shurrupak are described as being "willing to do almost anything to earn a few shekels." It is perhaps a local name for the Silver Piece.
- The Shekel is a real-world currency, historical and modern, from the Middle- and Near-east, and is another instance of the Mesopotamian source of many of the features of the lands of the Inland Sea.
