The Hunt for the Black Whale is a fan written Advanced Fighting Fantasy adventure by Andrew Wright. Part one was first published online in issue 9 of Fighting Fantazine in 2012 (pages 76-83). Part two has not been published yet.

BackgroundEdit

Call me Yshmaal! I've been sailing the seas of Titan longer than I care to remember. I've sailed the sea of blood, battled the demons of the deep, and survived an island of the undead. But the time I wish to tell you about is far worse than any of those. It concerns the time I joined the ill-fated hunt of the Black Whale...

RulesEdit

The adventure in general follows the original rules set down in Advanced Fighting Fantasy – The Roleplaying Game.

IllustrationsEdit

The interior illustrations are by Michael Wolmarans. There is one big illustration and one small (repeated) illustration. There are also deck plans of the good ship Questrel.

Main CharactersEdit

  • Akab - Captain of the Questrel
  • Yishmaal - Priest of Hydana

Intertextual RelationsEdit

Of course this adventure is inspired by Moby Dick, by Herman Melville. "Call me Ishmael." is one of world literature's most famous opening sentences and is clearly recalled in the opening of this adventure.

In the adventure introduction mentioned above, there are clear references to Seas of Blood (book), Demons of the Deep (book) and Island of the Undead (book). Other Fighting Fantasy adventures explicitely mentioned in the "Starting Play" session are Stormslayer (book) and Crown of Kings (AFF).

Further NotesEdit

Only the first part of the adventure is available, while the second and last part is announced to follow in next Fighting Fantazine, but insofar it was not published.
