At the time of the events described in The Shamutanti Hills, Vancass the Hunchback is a resident of the Shamutanti Hills in southern Kakhabad.
He is "an ugly hunch-backed creature" who lives in a small wooden hut by a bridge between Dhumpus and Birritanti.[1] Vancass will not allow travellers to pass over the bridge unless they answer a number of riddles.[2] He reveals himself to be a spell-caster, as he can, with a wave of his hand, inflict "a sharp pain surge" through the body of those who answer incorrectly.[3] If, on the other hand, his riddles are answered correctly, Vancass will let travellers pass, and may even reward them with some cryptic advice.[4]
